Sessions (30mins each) -CA_Technologies-logo

• Speaker 1 : Ben O’Loghlin

• Abstract : NA

As a consultant and a speaker, he brings provocative insights and groundbreaking ideas to CEOs and CFOs of ASX200 companies, and Managing Directors and owners of small but fast-growing e-tailers. Now as the CEO of debounce, Ben rigorously documents how the absence of speed drives users to abandon websites — and the dramatic impact this has on online sales.

• Speaker 2 : Trevor Warren

• Topic – Common Mistakes & How-to Avoid Making Them

• Abstract :  The last 15 years of working on programs big and small has taught me that irrespective of the geography, vertical or size of the customer organization, the types of mistakes made across the development life cycle that leads to systems not being able to meet their Non Functional Requirements is quite common. Delivering poor end user experiences and systems that fail to meet customer expectations seems to be the norm with a handful of exceptions. Throwing expensive consultants or products into the mix isn’t the answer. So what can we do to prevent our projects/customers from making the same mistakes. We’ll explore some of them in this session.

•  Bio : Trevor  Warren (Linked In) sees himself as a entrepreneur who focuses on building innovative solutions that have the potential to impact people’s lives in a positive manner. Trevor is inquisitive by nature, loves asking questions and sometimes does get into trouble for doing so. He’s passionate about certain things in life, building communities and solutions that have the ability to impact people’s lives in a positive manner are a few of them. He believes that he can change the world and is doing the little he can to change it in his own little ways. When not hacking, building new products, writing content for Practical Performance Analyst, dreaming up new concepts or building castles in the air, you can catch-him bird spotting (watching planes fly above his house).large_meetup_logo

Minutes Of The Meeting – CMG Australia (Vic) Meetup, Oct 14

Sixth CMGA Meetup comes to a close - This post wraps up the sixth CMG Australia Vic Meetup held on the 1st of October 2014 in Melbourne. Another action packed, tech talk filled and networking oriented CMG Australia Meetup comes to a close. We thank all of our members and partners (commercial, academic & research) for their support in making this meetup a success.

It was great catching up with our members again and have a chin wag on things that matter to us SPE (Systems Performance Engineering) professionals. From an Executive Committee Standpoint, we enjoyed participating in the session as much as organizing it. In-fact at the CMG Australia executive committee we are already looking forward to the next one. This post at CMG Australia presents some of the highlights of the CMG Australia Meetup held on the 1st October 2014 and also serves as the minutes of the meetingCMG_Int_Large_Scaled

The CMG Australia Meetup held on the 1st October 2014 was hosted by Riverbed Australia and was attended by 22 CMGites here in Melbourne. The event was held “The Apartment”, 401 Bourke Street, located in the heart of the Melbourne CBD.  We thank Riverbed Australia and especially Roger Boyd and Pasi Karjanmaa for their support and being such generous hosts.

CMGA membership currently stands at around 114 members and seems to growing everyday. As a result, participation in CMGA Meetups are now on first come first serve basis due to the limited nature of seating available. It’s unfortunate that we have to limit the participation at these events but limiting participation ensures that we are able to suitably cater to the audience. You can find details of the event at the CMG Australia Meetup website.

Meetup Highlights - The meetup kicked off at 1745 Hrs AEST with CMGites networking, tucking into some lovely fresh canapes, beer and wine. Our guest speakers for the day included Roger Boyd (Riverbed), Pasi Karjanmaa (Riverbed) and Marty Bolger (CPT Australia).

Marty and Michael welcomed the speakers and members to the meetup. The Meeting called to order around 1830 AEST by Marty. Marty spoke briefly on the sessions for the evening, with a short overview of the topics for the evening and then handed over to Roger Boyd and Pasi Karjanmaa from Riverbed Australia.

Roger Boyd started off with an overview of Riverbed and then handed over to Pasi. Pasi took over and gave us the audience an overview of how the Riverbed suite of tools could be used to diagnose poor application performance and it’s strengths in the NPM or Network Performance Management space. The audience found the topic interesting and raised relevant questions with the speakers.

There was a short break where the participants engaged in conversation with each other over a few more beers. The next presentation commenced at 1930. Marty Bolger started out by providing an overview of CPT followed by an informative presentation on the challenges and potential approaches to convincing clients to invest on Performance Engineering related services. Marty spoke about the approaches to convincing clients to invest in Capacity Planning, Performance testing and Tuning/Diagnosis services. Marty’s presentation was well received, with some anecdotes from the audience to add to Marty’s examples. Marty Bolger also happens to be part of the CMGA executive committee and is the CMGA Secretary.

Session 1 : Optimizing Delivery of Complex Applications for High Performance

Speakers : Roger Boyd and Pasi Karjanmaa

Abstract : Applications today no long run in silos but are rather a combination of components hosted in-house that link with other 3rd party components hosted around the world. To complicate the situation your customer could be accessing the application from any part of the world through a myriad of application devices. What perspectives should you be considering when looking at optimizing delivery of complex applications for high performance.

For those who couldn’t attend a copy of the talks have been uploaded to Youtube. You’ll find links to the various talks at the end of this post. We thank Michael Foster for his assistance in recording the content. A link to downloading the presentation is also provided towards the end of this post.

Session 2 :  Selling and Delivering The “Black Arts” To Business

Speakers : Marty Bolger

Abstract : As we have seen the common Business and IT landscape has changed significantly and continues to evolve rapidly.  The landscape is ever challenging for niche service providers to be heard within large outsourced environments, especially where the outsourcers are already engaged to provide the services we deliver.  The “Black Arts” services (Capacity Planning, Performance Testing, Performance Tuning/Diagnosis) are those that are clearly of interest to the customer to preserve the “End User” experience in production.  Further complicating the challenge is the need to deliver complex technical services and ensuring that the language used and outcomes delivered are relevant and able to be comprehended by business stakeholders.

It was great to see such a large turnout including a large number of new faces at the CMGA  meetup. Its always good to see CMG Australia Members turn our in large numbers to show their support and participate in our regional meetups which are not only a great opportunity to network but also to pick up on the latest trends impacting the industry.

Marty then took to the floor, thanked our hosts Riverbed Australia for hosting the session. Marty also thanked our speakers for taking the effort and presenting at the CMGA Meetup. The second session was followed by a brief networking session before things were wrapped up.

Closing Notes – We thank Riverbed Australia and specifically Roger Boyd and Pasi Kanjanmaa for providing CMGA with the Meetup venue and being such wonderful hosts. The next CMGA Meetup has been scheduled for the first week of December, and volunteers are being sought from partners to host the next meeting. Overall it was a great session, with interesting presentations by CMGA’s partners and members. We are thankful to all our speakers for taking the trouble, coming down and sharing with us their knowledge & their experiences in the SPE (Systems Performance Engineering) space. We look forward to working closely with all our our members and partners in building an innovative and sustainable ecosystem.

From an Executive Committee standpoint we would like to thank each and every CMGite who took the opportunity to come to the meetup, participate in the session, support the event, shared their knowledge and helped make it successful. We appreciate your support and your dedication towards helping build CMG Australia. A special thanks also to Michael Foster for assisting with the Video Recording and to our hosts for hosting the meetup.

As part of the executive committee at CMG Australia we look forward to working with you on building a strong professional organization focused on the interest of its members including the society we all live in. Our vision for CMG Australia is to be an organization that helps its members stay relevant, promoting the concepts of SPE across the SDLC, while fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through its various professional forums.
